Salom now!

Reaching out for a people’s peace in the Middle East

Khaled Diab

Peace is so important to Arabs and Israelis that they use the word to greet friends and strangers a like – ‘salam’/’shalom’, they say. Despite this, the Middle East appears to be increasingly falling prey to new conflicts. Perhaps the oldest and most intractable of these is the Arab-Israeli conflict, particularly its Israeli-Palestinian component.

But many people privately – and an increasing number publicly – do not believe that this is necessarily so. Salom Now! is an idea to create a civil alliance between Israelis and Arabs to give voice to those who desire to reach out for peace and an outlet to demonstrate that, despite the failure of our leaders to secure peace, we can still construct bridges of understanding and create a popular groundswell for peace.
